Plans are in place for Mahatma Ghandi Memorial School to participate in next year’s Vodafone Deans and Weet-Bix Raluve competitions.

This was revealed by Gujarat Education Society vice president Jitesh Patel on Wednesday night during their schools Coca-Cola Games presentation night at the Vatuwaqa school.

Patel made the revelation following the school’s recent successful Coca-Cola Games campaign where they won both the senior girls and boys 100 metres title

Sprinters Kesaia Boletakanakadavu and Waisele Inoke won the events respectively.

Patel said the school always excelled academically and they would like to now balance that with sports.

“I am already talking with the management to bring in rugby next year,” Patel said.

“This school has never played rugby; we want our students to start playing rugby as well.

“We have netball teams, the girls’ football team have already qualified for the nationals.

“We want to make it inclusive for the girls to take part in sports actively and achieve results.

“It is for Raluve as well; let’s start another chapter where rugby for girls and boys will be introduced next year, not all grades but at least two or three grades to start off.”

Meanwhile two Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union Weet Bix Raluve Under-18 matches are curtain raisers to the first of two Fiji Rugby Invitational series between the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and Manupa Samoa tomorrow at the HFC Bank Stadium.

The matches: 11am Raluve U18 Naitasiri Secondary vs Gospel High, 1pm Raluve U18 Lomary Secondary vs Basden College. Entry: Grandstand $10 flat; embankment: adults $5, children $2.
