A Labasa Beautician Awarded Hewson Award Best Female Entreprenuer

A Labasa beautician was awarded the best fe­male entrepreneur for the North by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Kajal Kalpana Hewson, 28, is a beautician and owner for The Secret of Northern Hair and Beauty with Spa.

She opened her shop in 2016.

Prior to this, she was working in partnership with the famous Teejay Loloma since 2012.

“I never thought that I would become a successful business­woman one day because I came from a struggling family,” Ms Hewson said.

“My late father was a taxi driver and mum was a market vendor.

“It was seeing my parents’ hard work in trying to provide for my sister and I, drove me to venture into business.

“My grandmother always en­couraged my sister and I to be independent and have our own business so as not to rely on anyone else’s finance.

“Running a business and try­ing to stay in the business is a challenge for a young woman because there are many salons in Labasa.

“I am blessed with a husband and in laws who support and encourage me when I want to give up.”

She is also thankful to the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its financial assistance to help stabilise her business.

The ministry saw that she had started her business so it stepped in to assist her finan­cially.

Over time she was doing well on her own and gained profit in her bank balance as well.

“She was given the award be­cause of that- being able to roll in the business which we want to see from every youth we as­sist,” said Macuata youth ad­ministrator Shalendra Bishwa.

Ms Hewson’s regular cus­tomers always look forward to the specials because they get discounts or even free service during specials days such as Easter and Mother’s Day.

Business is open from 7am -8.30pm from Monday to Satur­day at Shop 9, Savilla House on Reddy Street in Labasa.
