An alleged arson attempt at the Qeleloa Temple and Cultural Centre in Nadi has raised concern among devotees as preparations continue for the upcoming Ram Naumi celebrations.

Three separate fires were reportedly lit inside the temple compound on Sunday night, targeting ritual items prepared for the festival, Hindu holy books stored in a cupboard, and the section where idols are kept.

The incident was discovered on Monday morning by the caretaker and committee members after a broken door was found at the temple.

Committee secretary Ravindra Narain said the fire appeared to have gone out on its own before it could spread.

“Fortunately, the fire went out by itself during the night. I think it was God’s will that it did not spread,” Mr Narain said.

“They tried to set the fire in three places. Nothing was stolen. It looks like someone deliberately tried to destroy this sacred place.”

Mr Narain said a report had been lodged with Police but claimed response times were slow.

“This is not just a temple but also a cultural centre. Farmers have meetings here, government consultations are held here, and everyone, regardless of race, uses this place for their programmes,” he said.

Committee president Subbaiya said the incident was unprecedented since the centre was built in the 1970s.

“We have had break-ins before, but never something like this. It is very sad. It seems like someone wanted to destroy our sacred place,” he said.

He has urged Police to increase patrols in the area, especially with Ram Naumi approaching.

Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha president Dhirendra Nand said it was too early to determine whether the fire was deliberate or accidental and urged the public to allow authorities to investigate.

“At the moment we cannot jump to conclusions. We should be diplomatic and let the authorities investigate,” he said.

Mr Nand also advised temple committees and the public to remain vigilant during the festive period.

“As we approach the Ram Naumi celebrations, exercise caution while lighting diyas and do not leave them unattended. We have to take preventive measures to avoid such incidents repeating,” he said.

The Sanatan Sabha is working closely with the Qeleloa community to provide support.

Police have confirmed the incident and investigations are continuing.
