Grandpa, 77, on rape charge of granddaughter

A 77-year-old man who is facing a rape charge appeared in the High Court in Suva yesterday.
The accused appeared before Judge Justice Daniel Goundar. It is alleged that the accused had carnal knowledge of a 26-year-old on March 8, 2019, who was a student of a special school.
State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Setefano Komaibaba, told the court that the accused is the grandfather of the complainant. He also sought time to file information and disclosures in the matter.

Defence lawyer from the Legal Aid Commission, Lice Manulevu, told the court that the defence would file a proper bail application for the accused.
The matter was transferred to Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe for trial proper.
The accused was remanded in custody pending trial. The matter was adjourned to May 31 for plea.
