Jasper Singh served Lami Town Council for 24 years as mayor and later as special administrator. He did this without getting paid for the work.

His selfless service to Lami and its residents was honoured by the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote as Mr Singh was awarded the Officer of the Order of

Fiji medal.

Now he hopes that residents of Lami will do their part in making Lami a better town.

He said he believed in working together as he dedicated his medal recognition to the Almighty.

“I believe in giving and I do not expect anything in return and perhaps I am being rewarded for that. I am really honoured to receive this recognition,” he said.

Mr Singh had at first thought the call from the President’s Office was a prank call and asked for an email confirmation.

He had no idea that it was an Officer of the Order of Fiji medal which he was getting.

“I thought it was the Fiji50 Medal, but I was in for a surprise when I saw my name on the list of honours,” he said.

Mr Singh is a successful businessman, yet he admitted that he had seen his fair share of struggles.

Despite this he managed to make it out using his faith. Now Mr Singh is hoping that he is able to ask all those with a stake in Lami to do the right thing for the town.

“Industries can adopt best environmental and employment practices. I also hope that residents can clear up the beach side in Lami and then continue to keep it that way,” he said.
