Nightclubs unfairly blamed for youth problems, says Nadi businessman

Nightclubs, according to John Jeong Choon-Sik, the presi­dent of White House Night­ club in Martintar, Nadi, are for ma­ture adults, not children.

Speaking during a community meeting with Nadi Police at the Nadi Town Council Chamber on Wednesday, Mr Choon-Sik ad­dressed concerns surrounding the influence of nightclubs on young people.

“Nightclubs are not places for chil­dren, and they are not viewed by them,” he said.

“The real negative influencers on children are their own parents, family members, and relatives.”

Mr Choon-Sik noted that many people unfairly criticise nightclubs, assuming they negatively affect young minds.

“I’ve seen videos on ‘Facebook’ and other social media platforms, where adults-mothers, fathers, uncles, and aunties-dance in villages,” he said.

“Their behaviour, including drinking, smoking, and inappropriate  language, encourages their children to mimic them.

“The problem is not nightclubs, it’s the influence of family members.”

He said the collaboration between families, churches, and the education system to guide young people was im­portant.

“Doctors at Saint Giles Hospital have reported over 7000 young people in their care this year,” he said.

“The country cannot afford to close nightclubs, which contribute to our economy, because of the actions of a few individuals.”

Mr Choon-Sik also praised the po­lice’s 24/7 operations, which were highlighted by Acting Deputy Police Commander West, Esira Bari, during the meeting.

He believes the police and military presence is crucial for providing community security.
