Three people died in two separate road accidents over the weekend in the western division.
Two men died at the scene of a fatal accident in Wailoaloa, Nadi, yesterday, while a 21-year-old man died in another accident along the King’s Road at Dravuni, Tavua, on Saturday.
It is alleged that both accidents happened when the drivers lost control of their vehicles while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, Director of Traffic, said the police have yet to identify the two men who died in the Nadi accident.
“The two men died at the scene, according to information we received; the two were drinking with their cousin and were joined by five other youths at Wailoaloa beach at about 6.30 this morning (yesterday),” SSP Divuana said.
“We are still investigating, the two that died are yet to be identified by their relatives, we got their names but we have to confirm their identity.”
SSP Divuana said the deceased were related to the driver.
“He (the driver) was released from the Nadi hospital and is in custody at the Namaka Police Station,” he said.
The other three involved in the accident were taken to Nadi Hospital. In Tavua, a 21-year-old man was driving along the Kings Road near Draunivi, on Saturday when the accident occurred.
He was rushed to Tavua hospital, but passed away the same afternoon. The four people travelling with the victim were treated and sent home. It is alleged speeding was the cause of accident.
“Speeding continues to be a concern. We are booking drivers every day for exceeding the speed limit; this is despite warnings and advice by police and Land Transport Authority,” SSP Divuana said.
“Traffic officers at checkpoints are issuing reminders, yet majority continues to turn a deaf ear. The road death toll currently stands at 31 compared to 57 for the same period last year.
Together we can keep the statistics from growing, if we all acknowledge and accept our responsibilities.
