In a momentous occasion steeped in history and family pride, the Traill family, descendants of the esteemed Scottish sailor Captain James Traill, rejoiced as they witnessed the traditional installation of Tui Levuka Ratu Etonia Seru Rokotunaceva.

The ceremony, which took place at Levuka Vakaviti Village, on Tuesday marked a significant milestone for both the Traill family and the community of Levuka.

Speaking to Albert Traill, a representative of the Traill family, sentiments of joy and gratitude resonated as he expressed: “This is coming home for us.”

Traill, who ventured from Orkney Island in Scotland to Samoa before settling in Fiji in the early 1800s.

Mr Traill recounted the family ‘s lineage, highlighting the journey of resilience and perseverance that has defined their legacy.

“If there wasn’t for Levuka, the Traills wouldn’t exist in Fiji today,” he emphasised.

From Captain James Traill to Benjamin James Traill and beyond, each generation has contributed to the rich tapestry of the Traill family’s history, who are now living in Germany, America, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

The installation ceremony served as an emotional moment for the Traill family to reconnect with their roots and instill a sense of heritage in the younger generations.

“We are now in Levuka with our fifth and sixth generation teaching them the history, and showing them, this is where your forefathers came from,” Mr Traill remarked, stressing the importance of preserving family stories for future generations.

Reflecting on the significance of the occasion, Mr Traill expressed gratitude for the opportunity to witness the traditional rites associated with the installation of Tui Levuka.

“Being present and witnessing the traditional installation of Tui Levuka was such an amazing occasion,” he said, acknowledging the blessings bestowed upon the family.

As the Traill family embarks on a journey to honour their legacy, plans are underway to rebuild the family home in Levuka Vakaviti village, symbolising a commitment to preserving their heritage for future generations.

“It is such a blessing to be back home, and we need to be proud of our history and where we come from,” he emphasised.

In the celebrations, the Traill family remains committed in their resolve to stay connected to their roots and identity.

“The reason for a reunion is to ensure our future generations remain connected to their roots and identity,” Mr Traill said, emphasing the importance of maintaining family bonds across generations.

As the Traill family bids farewell to Fiji after a week-long visit, their presence at the installation of Tui Levuka serves as a touching reminder of the enduring legacy of Captain James Traill and the strong spirit of the Traill family.
