Hurdler Errol Bernard Qaqa has defied the odds to earn a place in Fiji’s squad for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 110m hurdler missed the recent Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, Australia, because of injury.

“I was injured and, even though I travelled to the Oceania Athletics Championships, I wasn’t able to compete. The physio ruled me out,” Qaqa said.

Despite the setback, Qaqa said it motivated him to work harder.

“I was disappointed, but I wasn’t discouraged. Missing the Oceania Championships pushed me to do my best in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

“I’m ready to put my best foot forward and use those setbacks as motivation for future competitions and the upcoming Games,” he said.

Qaqa said competing in Scotland would be a special experience.

“I’ve travelled around the Pacific and Asia, but travelling to Scotland is a huge blessing, not just for me but for everyone in our team. We are all looking forward to the Commonwealth Games,” he said.

Qaqa also thanked supporters for their continued encouragement.
