Ebenezer Saukuru of Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) redeemed himself on the second day of the Fiji Finals after winning gold in the intermediate boys’ javelin throw in Suva yesterday.
The win came a day after Saukuru settled for a silver medal in the long jump event on Thursday.
Saukuru clinched gold with a throw of 56.90 metres.
“I did this for my school and I’m so proud of myself,” he said. “I thank God for that.”
He said the gold medal was crucial in MBHS’s bid to defend the boys’ title.
“I dedicate this win to my family, the Marist Old Boys and the parents who have been supporting us throughout our six weeks of camp,” Saukuru said.
Looking ahead, Saukuru said his next major focus would be the Oceania Games in Darwin, Australia.
“The next thing for me is the Oceania Games in Darwin, Australia, and I’m so glad I’ve made it,” he said.
It will be Saukuru’s first time representing Fiji overseas.
He also used the Fiji Finals platform to share a personal message with youths.
“The message for youths out there is to repent while you still have the chance,” he said.
Saukuru said he displayed the message during competition.
“I wrote ‘repent’ on my jump shoes and my armband,” he said.
In addition to the javelin event, Saukuru also competed in the 4x100 metres relay.
