Latter-day Saints College’s Sammy Richard Garae was happy to win gold in the senior boys’ 800 metres final yesterday.
The 18-year-old Vanuatu native said it was quite special winning the event during the Suva Zone One competition at the ANZ Stadium.
“To win here in Fiji and away from home is something special. I know my family will be proud of my achievement,” he said.
“I used to run back in Samoa but this competition is massive.”
Garae added the atmosphere was unique and that spurred him on.
“I knew I was going to win and the crowd urged me on so that pushed me to win,”he said.
“Now I’ll focus on my training next week preparing for the Coke Games in April. I’m told it’s a big event and I’m looking forward to it.
“My aim is to at least win a medal.”
