Kumar siblings eye 2027 Pacific Games

Siblings Ryan and Raina Kumar have made an impressive start to the GM Motors Fiji Classic 2026 at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club as they bid to boost their chances of selection for the 2027 Pacific Games.

Ryan led the men’s division after the opening day, while defending champion Raina topped the women’s standings after two rounds of the tournament, which concludes today.

Ryan said the Fiji Classic, the country’s premier golf tournament, was a key opportunity to earn valuable ranking points towards national team selection.

“It is the biggest tournament in the country, and I’ve been working hard,” he said.

“I start work at 6 am and then get to the golf course around 3.30 pm or 4 pm. I try to get at least one or two hours of practice each day.

“I’m hoping for a good result because I want to make the Fiji team for the Pacific Games. I need the points, so I have to play well this weekend.”

Ryan said his 2026 season had been encouraging after claiming his first tournament title last month despite balancing work, study and golf.

“It’s been good. I got my first win this year about last month. There have been a few ups and downs and some bad tournaments, but I’m trying to balance work, study and golf.”

He also praised the condition of the course.

“The course is in good condition, so everyone should just play well and enjoy the weekend.”

Raina said she was looking forward to defending her title in a stronger field featuring international competitors.

“I’m so excited to be back this year,” she said.

“I played last year, and it went really well. This time we have 162 players, including overseas competitors, which is great.”

She said the Fiji Classic was also an important qualifying event for the 2027 Pacific Games.

“I hope to play well. It’s a world-ranking event, so I hope to earn more points and improve my world ranking.”
