The Police rugby league team staged a heroic comeback for a Golden Point win over the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in their Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl annual clash at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.
Both teams were tied 28-28 at fulltime before Police scored the try that sealed their win 32-28 to end their two-year drought.
Police rugby league coach Sale Tubuna who had just led the Police women's team to the Fiji National Rugby League Women's Championship earlier this year said, the win was meaningful given the tight preparation window.
"I was given the task to bring back the glory to Nasova," the former Fiji Residents head coach said.
"It was quite a challenge we only had a week to prepare but the boys responded. We knew what we needed, we got the right players in, trained hard and they delivered. Considering the time, I think we've done exceptionally well."
Tubuna, who spent the past three years coaching the Police sevens rugby team said returning to the Ratu Sukuna Bowl scene and lifting the title again was an emotional milestone.
He added that the win symbolises more than sporting victory it reflects unity and teamwork within the Force.
"We showed that we need people to work together, just like we do in combating drugs in our country. This win is for all our families who sacrificed their time, and for every police officer still out there on operations."
Celebrations across police stations were expected to be lively, with Tubuna joking that "kava will drink much better from now on."
Meanwhile, in rugby, RFMF edged Police 27-22 to claim the development title.
