Wood carving designs he saw in shops inspired 22-year-old Dipeek Chand to start his own business from home.
Mr Chand is a Civil Engineering student at the Fiji National University and currently operates his business from 339 Ratu Mara Road, Nabua, Suva. He is originally from Ra.
“In year 2017, I tried to make something from wood. I thought of unique designs. When I completed my first art, I received positive feedback from family members. That inspired me to start wood carving,” he said.

“I have sold many of my creations from home, and some are in New Zealand, United State of America, and Sri Lanka. This has become my daily income as I have to pay my rent and to send some to my parents back in Ra.”
Mr Chand said the challenges he faces are; that he does not own a shop and does not have fixed customers to buy his art.

“I am using hand tools to design my work and I try to do unique pieces to make it attractive, so that people are interested in buying,” said the 22-year-old.
“I want to make people happy when they see my pieces.
Prices are based on the designs and the size of board or wood preferred. The pieces range from $100 - $150 for a board bigger than A3 size.
