Residents of Korotari, Labasa have raised concerns over a damaged culvert along Raravou Road, near Korotari School, which is affecting daily travel for commuters.

Korotari resident Pradeep Lal said bus services had been suspended for the past four weeks after the culvert was partially washed away.

“People now have to get off at the main road and walk more than 500 meters to reach their homes, carrying groceries and other items,” Mr Lal said.

“A simple repair of the culvert would allow buses to operate on this road again, but nothing has been done so far,” he said.

Another resident, Om Prakash, said the situation had become increasingly difficult for elderly residents and families, especially with the school term expected to begin later this month.

“There are elderly people who travel to the hospital regularly, and once schools open, children will also be affected,” Mr Prakash said.

“During rainy days it becomes very hard for people to walk while carrying groceries. The road becomes slippery and unsafe,” he said.

Residents said the damaged culvert had not only affected transport services but had also raised safety concerns, particularly during periods of heavy rain.

An email sent to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) regarding the issue had remained unanswered when this issue went to press.

Residents are disappointed and call for urgent action from the authority.
