Lautoka born Avinesh Kumar has worked hard since his teenage years in the United States of America making sure he becomes successful one day.
And today he is reaping the benefits of his hard work.
In mid-June this year, he was overjoyed when he was given the role of the San Francisco Postmaster.

“I am honored and proud, I never dreamt to be part of this which is a big moment for me.
“I grew up watching tall buildings on TV and never dreamt about coming here and becoming part of this city.
“You know when they say America is the land of opportunity, it’s so true. We come from a small island and over here, we are doing big things.
“We have a big Fijian community out here.”
Mr Kumar was born in Drasa, Vitogo in Lautoka and he attended Tilak High School, worked at the Fiji Sugar Corporation before he migrated to the U.S. in 1993 at the age of 19.
He joined the U.S Navy and later began his postal service employment in 2004 as a city letter carrier.
He said it was challenging but he being given a lot of responsibility at a younger age and learning discipline at the Navy, got him through.
He entered the postal management ranks in 2014 and effectively changed the culture and environment in the offices that he managed.
Mr Kumar is the 32nd postmaster of San Francisco and heads one of the largest city and retail operations in the U.S. with 1300 employees, 12 delivery units, 32 retail stations, serving approximately one million customers.
He is the third of four siblings. Currently he is a widower after his American wife passed away.
He has a 23-year-old daughter.
“I’ve never felt that I will make it this far. I am here and making sure to continue to work hard, 100 per cent and just take it as far as I can,” Mr Kumar said.
“My goal is to provide outstanding customer service to the communities served by the San Francisco Post Office and to contribute to the overall success of the Postal Service.
“As outlined in our USPS Delivering for America plan, we’re modernizing and continually adapting to the evolving needs of our customers.
“I’m very much aware of the vital role we play in connecting neighbors and the community to the nation,” he added.
