A man in his 50s died in a car accident on Edinburgh Drive in Samabula, Suva, this afternoon.

According to police, the victim allegedly lost control of the vehicle he was driving, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a lamp post.

Officers from the National Fire Authority and the Police worked together to remove the victim from the vehicle.

He was then transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where medical officials confirmed his death.

Eyewitness Jotame Tavo said the crash occurred during heavy rain in the capital city.

“It was raining heavily when the accident happened. I saw the car hit the post, and some of us ran to help,” Mr Tavo said.

He added that they tried to pull the man out of the car, but he was stuck.

“We couldn’t get him out, so I called the fire department,” he said. “The man was alone in the car at the time of the crash.”

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
