Vanua Levu Set to Welcome a New International Airport

Having another airport built in Vanua Levu is in the pipeline, says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka.
Mr Gavoka, while attending the May 2023 Investment Fiji forum with Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Savusavu Tourism Association at Daku Resort in Savusavu, had revealed a new site was identified to build the north's first international airport.
He then spent two days with a special team consisting of experts from various agencies looking for a suitable site that can land bigger aircrafts (ATR 72, Boeing 737) to uplift tourism in Vanua Levu.

"We will be also looking at Taveuni primarily and there is down the line another airport plan for somewhere Nasarawaqa in Bua," Mr Gavoka said.
"A new World Bank-funded project that aims to support Fiji's efforts to develop the tourism potential of Vanua Levu includes the Labasa and Savusavu domestic airports," he said.
The Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu has confirmed financing was approved by the World Bank's board of executive directors.
It is the first of three projects planned over 10 years to help Fiji deliver its vision for more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism across the country.
First phase focuses on bolstering tourism in Vanua Levu, including Taveuni Island, by improving access to and climate resilience of essential services like drainage, sewage, and transport infrastructure.
