Rewa footballer Merrill Nand was bailed yesterday after the court found there was insufficient basis to support Police concerns that he would interfere with witnesses or flee while his case continues.
Nand appeared before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad at the Suva Magistrate Court. He was released on a $1,000 cash bail bond subject to strict conditions.
He faces three counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and two counts of assault relating to alleged incidents last year.

During the bail hearing, Police prosecutor Inspector Jone Tupua opposed bail, raising concerns about possible witness interference, particularly involving the complainant, and the risk of Nand leaving the country.
However, Magistrate Prasad said the court had considered submissions from both sides and was not satisfied that Nand posed a flight risk or would interfere with witnesses.
The court also noted that the State's objection was based on concerns raised but did not sufficiently address matters presented by the defence.
Nand's lawyer, Jitendra Reddy, submitted that his client maintained his right to be presumed innocent and would comply with any bail conditions imposed by the court.
As part of his bail conditions, Nand must not contact or interfere with witnesses, must not commit any further offences, surrender his passport and is prohibited from obtaining a new passport.
A travel ban has also been imposed with immediate effect.
Nand's case has been referred to the High Court and will be called on Friday.
