Two killed in Navua accident, revives speed hump plea

A Vakabalea resident has renewed calls for speed humps along Vakabalea Road after a multiple-vehicle crash claimed two lives in Navua yesterday afternoon.

Police confirmed this morning that the victims were a 70-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman.

It is alleged that their vehicle had veered onto the opposite lane resulting in a multiple-vehicle collision.

Police said four others traveling in the other two vehicles were treated at the Navua Hospital and sent home.

"The victims bodies are being kept at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where they will undergo post mortem examinations," police said.

The national road death toll currently stands at 31 compared to 39 for the same period last year.

The accident caused heavy traffic along Queens Road.

Aminiasi Danford was among two pedestrians who narrowly escaped being struck after his cousin, Petero Lagi, pushed him out of the vehicle's path moments before the collision.

"I had hired my cousin to drop me off home from Navua. My back was facing the road, so I didn't see the car, but with that little push, I was saved. God is good," Mr Danford said.

Mr Danford said he had repeatedly called for speed humps to be installed along the road, claiming previous accidents highlighted the need for traffic-calming measures.

"I have been asking the Government and ministers every time, put humps along this road to avoid further accidents," he said.

"How many more deaths need to happen for someone to do something about it? Last year a child got hit along this same road and now this."

The Fiji Sun sought comment from the Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, the Land Transport Authority and the Fiji Police Force. No response was received before publication.
