FRU backs move to take school rugby around

Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) chief executive officer Koli Sewabu has backed the interim Fiji Secondary School Rugby Union’s decision to stage its games at different venues this year.

It was possible with the support of the Ministry of Education.

“They make the decision based on a number of factors and trying to grow the game,” Sewabu said.

“They’re taking the game where it matters the most, and we’ve seen the results over the last week as well, with some surprises there.”

Sewabu said the Deans and Raluve games would be held in Lautoka and Suva respectively.

“You’ve seen some of the social media and comments, with videos that have been thrown around over the last weekend with regards to our facilities, which needed a lot of help,” he said.

“At the end of the day, for us, we don’t own a ground.

“We are end users as well, so we try to make bookings according to what’s available, and we’ll make do with what we have.”

Sewabu added that he was not aware of the media ban imposed by a few participating schools in the respective Deans and Raluve competitions.

“Nothing has been brought to our attention, but I’ll have a look into this and get all the facts around it before I can make comment on it,” he said.
