People's Alliance defends sharing Government achievements on party page

The People's Alliance (PA) has defended its decision to promote Coalition Government achievements on its official Facebook page, rejecting claims by coalition partner SODELPA that it was using government-funded projects for political campaigning.
Party general secretary Sila Balawa said the party was simply keeping its supporters informed about the work being carried out by the Coalition Government.
"As a party, we put on our page things that our voters are interested in," Mr Balawa said.

"Part of that is what the Government has been doing. We have a duty to show our supporters what we have been or are doing in Government."
Mr Balawa said the posts were intended for the party's followers and were largely shared from official government pages.
"Our page is for what would interest our readers, our followers and our supporters.
"They voted us into Government to do exactly those works for the benefit of the people of Fiji. We are just telling them that this is happening."
He questioned why the issue had been raised now, saying coalition partners had previously promoted projects and achievements on their own party platforms without criticism.
"They have done the same in the past. We never said a word against them. Why they are suddenly jumping up and down about it now."
His comments follow criticism from SODELPA general secretary Simione Rasova, who claimed the People's Alliance was portraying Government-funded projects as party achievements.
Mr Rasova said projects funded with public money belonged to the Coalition Government, not any individual political party.
"They did not fund that. It was funded by Government, so it's a Government achievement," Mr Rasova said.
He said the projects should be recognised as achievements of the Coalition Government rather than used to promote a single party.
"It is the Coalition Government," Mr Rasova said.
Mr Rasova also alleged that People's Alliance candidates were already campaigning through the party's online platforms ahead of the next general election.
The latest exchange marks another public disagreement between coalition partners over the use of Government achievements in political messaging as Fiji moves closer to the next general election.
